Location & weather

Jyväskylä is the largest city in the province of Central Finland. It is located in the west of Finnish Lakeland, 270 kilometres north of Helsinki and 150 kilometres north-east of Tampere. Jyväskylä is surrounded by hills, forests and hundreds of lakes. The summers are warm, and the winters are cold and snowy.

 

Climate

The summers in Jyväskylä are warm, and the winters are cold and snowy. The annual average temperature is between +3 °C and +4 °C. January and February are the coldest months, with average temperatures between -8 °C and -9 °C. July is the warmest month of the year, with an average temperature of +17 °C. On 11 to 15 days a year, the temperature rises above +25 °C, sometimes as early as April. Summer lasts for about 3.5 months, while winter is 4.5 to 5 months long. Winter usually begins in November, with snow covering the ground by the end of the month. Spring comes in early April, and summer begins in late May. Autumn usually begins in early September.
