Petäjävesi Old Church

Petäjävesi Old Church – masterpiece of construction in wood.

Petäjävesi Old Church gained inclusion in Unesco’s world heritage list as an prime example of northern wooden architecture in 1994. The church is representative of Scandinavian, Lutheran church architecture and the long tradition of log building.

The church, located on a lake shore in the Jyväskylä Region, was built in 1763-1765. Since the new parish church was built in 1879 the old one has not been used for regular services. Continuous repairs have been carried out since the 1920s.

The church is open in summer and different types of events are held in the venue.

The church is open during the summer season (From 1st of June to 31st of August).
During the winter season, the church is open only by reservation. Group visits may be arranged, if the visit is reserved at least two weeks in advance.

The Petäjävesi Old Church is not fully barrier-free. The building is old, its floors are not completely level, and some thresholds are high. The stairs outside the building are also quite steep. People with reduced mobility can drive closer to the church from the north via the road Siltatie. One of the outhouses is accessible to wheelchair users.
