The Karoliinan portaat are an impressive natural cliff formation resembling large steps. They are named after a well-known nature healer, Karoliina Raatikainen, who negotiated these steps, summer and winter, on her way to her cottage. The nature trail is 1.5 km long and leads to the bottom of the steps.

Starting point and guidance: The trail starts from a car park along the Vesanto–Viitasaari road (no. 659).

Average hiking time:
The trail is easy to walk and takes about an hour to complete. Parts of the trail are covered with a boardwalk. Note that climbing on the steps is forbidden because of the steepness of the cliffs and imminent risk of a rockfall. Be sure to keep to the marked path.

Trail markings:
Orange paint markings indicated the route. Information boards along the trail provide facts about the local habitat and history.

Recommended footwear:
In dry weather, the path is suitable for regular outdoor shoes. The boardwalk can be slippery during wet weather.
