Petäjävesi Old Church

Petäjävesi Old Church was accepted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 and has been described as a landmark of Nordic wooden architecture. The building represents Nordic, Lutheran church architecture and the time-honoured heritage of log-building skills.

The Finnish Heritage Agency has created a 3D model of the Petäjävesi Old Church, which allows valuable knowledge of the cultural heritage site to be passed on also to future generations. The modelling has been carried out as part of the Finnish Heritage Agency’s 3D modelling project for World Heritage sites. The Petäjävesi Old Church was selected for modelling as it is a particularly important and significant building, not only in Finland but also elsewhere in Europe.

Struve Geodetic Arc: Oravivuori Arc Point

In addition to the Petäjävesi Old Church, there is also another UNESCO World Heritage site in Jyväskylä Region: The Puolakka measuring point at Oravivuori, in Jyväskylä’s Korpilahti. Oravivuori is part of the Struve triangulation chain and was accepted on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005. The site represents the cultural heritage of science and technology.

The unique virtual experience created through the Struve Experience project takes the Oravivuori experience to a new level by bringing the history and story of the Struve chain and the Oravivuori measuring point to life through art. The virtual traveller is truly taken on a cultural heritage journey, combining an important world heritage site with the latest technology.

Leivonmäki National Park

Leivonmäki National Park is one of the four national parks in Jyväskylä Region. It is located in Joutsa, making it the southernmost national park in Jyväskylä Region. Leivonmäki National Park offers varied terrain, stunning scenery and trails of many levels. The 30 square kilometres of land are home to landscapes of ridges, lakes and marshes that can be admired all year round.

With the Matkailun vastuullisuus näkyväksi Keski-Suomessa project (highlighting the responsibility of tourism in Jyväskylä Region), it is now possible to visit Leivonmäki National Park also virtually. For example, a nature tourist can view the park’s signature bird, the nightjar, in detail, check up-to-date forest fire warnings, admire the beautiful scenery of the Joutsniemi Ridge or compete with a fellow hiker in a quiz about the tradition and nature of the area.

City of Light

As the autumn evenings grow gloomier, the darkening city is transformed into the City of Light through a series of illuminated sites. Indeed, Jyväskylä is a pioneer in urban lighting with over a hundred permanently illuminated sites. The City of Light project has also received a lot of international recognition, and Jyväskylä has been awarded in the international city.people.light competition.

You can also admire Jyväskylä’s many different illuminated sites and previous years’ City of Light events virtually.
