Harbour from above 
 
The Lutakko Harbour in Jyväskylä is located on Lake Jyväsjärvi, right next to the city centre and the Travel Centre. It is easy to reach the harbour from the direction of the city centre on foot or by bike. There is also plenty of parking space for cars at the harbour and in the Lutakonaukio parking facility. 
 
Alvar Aalto’s boat is on display in the boat shelter built for it at the tip of the harbour, at the end of the harbour on the side of the Kuokkala bridge. There is unobstructed access to the boat shelter from both the lake side and from the parking area. The sauna restaurant Sataman Viilu is located next to the boat shelter, and behind it you can see the Kuokkala bridge that connects the residential areas of Lutakko and Kuokkala. The bridge is one of the best known landmarks in Jyväskylä. It has impressive lighting in the dark hours. 
 
People tend to spend time in the popular harbour area in the summer on outdoor terraces and restaurant ships and in various events, among others. In the winter, the harbour is filled with those enjoying the outdoors: a skating track and cross-country skiing tracks are provided on the ice of Lake Jyväsjärvi when the weather is cold enough.

Jyväskylä, Alvar Aalto capital 


Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is one of the best known Finnish architects and designers. Jyväskylä and its surroundings boast more building projects designed by Alvar Aalto in his various creative eras than any other location in the world – 29 in all. These include the Jyväskylä Worker’ Club, which is one of the main works in Aalto’s early career, the Seminaarinmäki campus area that is the result of a winning solution to an invitational competition, and the Säynätsalo Town Hall, Aalto’s landmark work. In addition, a wooden motor boat designed by Aalto is on display at the Lutakko Harbour in Jyväskylä. He used the boat to travel to his summer residence at the Muuratsalo Experimental House. 


The connection between Alvar Aalto and Jyväskylä was established at an early stage. Aalto spent much of his childhood in Jyväskylä, went to school there and did his matriculation examination in Jyväskylä. After graduating as an architect, Alvar Aalto returned to Jyväskylä, where he established his first architect’s office. In Jyväskylä, you can follow in Aalto’s footsteps from classicism to functionalism and from brick architecture to monumental buildings.

Nemo propheta in patria -boat


"No one is a prophet in his own country" is a motor boat with a cabin designed by Alvar Aalto.

• Materials: hull of pine board, deck grates of oak, cabin + instrument panel of mahogany. The boat has also included a pine mast mainly for festive flagging.

The boat was restored in 1983 as a museum object (Mallituote Lasse Andersson). The restorative renovation of the exterior surfaces was carried out in 2014, and the interior surfaces and fixtures were renovated in 2021 (boat carpenter Jarmo Heikkilä). The purpose of the renovations has been to preserve the boat as an exhibit. The original boat equipment and textiles were conserved in 2022 (Museum of Central Finland / conservator Esko Ahola and Craft Museum of Finland / Conservation Centre).


The boat belongs to the collections of the Alvar Aalto Museum and is owned by the City of Jyväskylä.

Nemo propheta in patria


When Alvar and Elissa Aalto were supervising the construction of the Säynätsalo Town Hall, they got to know the surrounding areas on their rowing trips. They found a rocky plot of land in Muuratsalo beside Lake Päijänne, which they managed to buy for themselves. Between 1952 and 1954, the architect couple’s summer home referred to as the Experimental House was built there. The house was located on an island, which is why building their own motorboat became necessary.  


Alvar Aalto had an ambitious approach to the boat building project. One indication of this is the fact that the archives of the Alvar Aalto Museum contain over 300 sketches and drawings of the boat.  
The boat became elegantly streamlined, and it bears some resemblance to landing craft. It has a long low bow so that it could be used for going ashore on the natural beaches of Lake Päijänne. A wooden boat pier was also built in the rocky cove of the Experimental House according to Aalto’s plans. 


The boat with a pine hull was built in a boat workshop in Säynätsalo under the leadership of Lauri Kosola and Väinö Jokinen. The large boat is 10.5 metres long, 2 metres wide and weighs 2000 kg. A 6-cylinder, 96 horsepower Scripps Marine engine from the USA was ordered for the boat.  The heavy boat ran deep in the water and left big waves behind it. The engine was actually too powerful for the boat, so its steering required skill and caution. Elissa Aalto was often seen at the helm.  


 The boat was launched on 7 September 1955 and was named Nemo propheta in Patria (No one is a prophet in his own country). The boat was used by Alvar and Elissa until Alvar Aalto’s death. After this, the Aalto family used it for a few years in the archipelago of Turku, but the boat was not very well suited to sea conditions. In 1982, the family donated the boat to the Alvar Aalto Museum. The boat has been on display earlier on the grounds of the Experimental House. By the summer of 2023 it had been restored and was moved to the shelter built for it at the harbour of Jyväskylä.

The boat was launched on one occasion, and the wood had not swollen enough. When I went to work past it, I could only see its highest points. I ran to the factory and said: “Aalto’s boat has sunk!” The fire department was called to pump the water out and lift the boat. We were anxious about the reaction of the owner. But Alvar Aalto said that even bigger ships go down, and so did the Titanic. He took it all quite well.
