Facade of building on Väinönkatu street side


The Workers’ Club is placed in a corner of two streets, Kauppakatu and Väinönkatu. This posed Alvar Aalto with an “architectural problem”, albeit an inspiring one.  
 
All the facades of the building are different and highlight the division of functions on the inside.  The facade on the Väinönkatu street side is dominated by a row of windows structured by Tuscan pillars downstairs and the Palladian parade window on the more solid second floor. Round medallion ornaments represent smaller decorative items. The symmetry of the facade has been broken on purpose. 
 
The bottom left corner of the building contains the impressive entrance into the theatre with its baldachin canopy and long lances. The deep colours of the underside of the canopy give a suggestion of the colour palette that continues inside the building. The handles of the copper-clad doors resemble sword handles.

Jyväskylä, Capital city of Alvar Aalto



Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is one of the best known Finnish architects and designers. Jyväskylä and its surroundings boast more building projects designed by Alvar Aalto in his various creative eras than any other location in the world – 29 in all. These include the Jyväskylä Worker’ Club, which is one of the main works in Aalto’s early career, the Seminaarinmäki campus area that is the result of a winning solution to an invitational competition, and the Säynätsalo Town Hall, Aalto’s landmark work. In addition, a wooden motor boat designed by Aalto is on display at the Lutakko Harbour in Jyväskylä. He used the boat to travel to his summer residence at the Muuratsalo Experimental House. 


The connection between Alvar Aalto and Jyväskylä was established at an early stage. Aalto spent much of his childhood in Jyväskylä, went to school there and did his matriculation examination in Jyväskylä. After graduating as an architect, Alvar Aalto returned to Jyväskylä, where he established his first architect’s office. In Jyväskylä, you can follow in Aalto’s footsteps from classicism to functionalism and from brick architecture to monumental buildings.

The Workers’ Club in Jyväskylä is one the main works in Alvar Aalto’s early career and the first public building he designed for Jyväskylä. The building resembling a Venetian urban palace was completed in 1925 and represents Nordic Classicism with Renaissance influences. 
Alvar Aalto’s first wife Aino Aalto made crucial contribution to the design work, and the Workers’ Club is the result of their joint efforts. During the construction work, the Aalto couple spent their honeymoon in Northern Italy and received inspiration especially for the interior design of the building. 
 
The building originally housed several different functions. The downstairs with the large windows used to have two cafeteria facilities and a restaurant. The foyer and theatre hall of the workers’ theatre were upstairs. Nowadays, the former theatre section is known as the A-hall or as Aalto hall and is used for get-togethers, parties and cultural events.  
 
A visit to the Jyväskylä Workers’ Club designed by Alvar Aalto may present a surprise for many. Wasn’t Aalto’s architecture supposed to be modern and stylish in a subdued and bright way? This building contains deep, even dramatic colours, the lighting fixtures are ornamentally beautiful, and wherever you look, there are allusions to Mediterranean cultures. This building is like a bijou.

Foyer


The eyecatcher in the foyer is the cylindrical wall with round symmetrical figures painted on it. The double door in the middle of the curved wall is decorated with golden rosettes and leads into the theatre. The model of the wall can be found in the church of San Pancrazio in Florence, where Leon Battista Alberti designed a marble sepulchre for the family of Giovanni di Paolo Rucellai in the mid-15th century. It is possible that Aino and Alvar Aalto visited the chapel on their honeymoon.  The curved wall creates an impression of an outdoor facade indoors. This idea is repeated later in other buildings designed by Alvar Aalto, such as in the main building of the College of Education at Seminaarinmäki in Jyväskylä. 
  
The walls of the foyer are Pompeii red. There are beautiful sconces between the narrow and high windows, two chandeliers with Renaissance influences are suspended from the ceiling, and lantern-like lamps are above the doors leading into the theatre hall. The furniture in the foyer is not original.  There are stairs to the gallery on both sides of the foyer.

Front hall


The front hall is dim. It is illuminated by the beautiful lantern-type metal lamps. The cloakroom is on the right, and stairs to the foyer of the theatre start from the left. The left side at both ends contains stairs down to men’s and women’s toilets. Beside them, there are two small openings with a semi-circle at their top; these used to be ticket sales points, which were later closed. The front hall originally provided access to a cafeteria-restaurant. The curved wall of the cafeteria can be seen behind the cloakroom in the middle on the right. 
 
Before ascending to the foyer, take a final look at the intense colours in the air box and the decorative paintings with arch motifs on both end walls of the front hall.

Gallery


Red and black doors open onto the small gallery decorated with golden, sun-shaped details. The gallery offers a view of the theatre hall, which is illuminated by star-shaped lamps suspended from the ceiling. The rows of seats in the gallery rise towards the curved back wall. Eight small lamps, which are attached to the upper part of the wall, create a wedge-shaped light on the ceiling.

Staircase


Access from the front hall to the foyer takes place from two opposite sides. The landing is illuminated through the impressive semi-circular window. The staircase is decorated on both sides also by pot motifs with golden stripes.

Theatre hall 


The solemn atmosphere of the building culminates in the theatre hall. The main entrance first leads to a lower space under the gallery. Further at the back, the hall opens up and becomes brighter. The Palladian windows on the long walls of the hall are symmetrical with respect to each other. The star-shaped pendants on the ceiling and the seashell-themed lamps on the wall under the gallery create a magical theatre atmosphere.  
A coffered ceiling curves above the stage. Steps rise to the side doors of the stage on both sides of the stage.  
 
The chairs for the theatre were originally ordered from the Muurame chair factory. In the 1960s, a steeply ascending grandstand was built in the hall. This was demolished in the 1980s, when the theatre moved to the current Jyväskylä City Theatre, which was also designed by Alvar Aalto and his office.
