EASS and ISSA 2026 Conference Welcomed the Global Sport Sociology Community to Jyväskylä
The EASS and ISSA 2026 Conference, a joint international conference of the European Association for Sociology of Sport (EASS) and the International Sociology of Sport Association (ISSA), was held in Jyväskylä, Finland, from 15–18 June 2026 at the University of Jyväskylä’s Seminaarinmäki Campus. As one of the leading annual events in the field of sport sociology, the conference has been organized for decades and was hosted in Finland for only the second time. Jyväskylä was selected in recognition of Finland’s strong international reputation in sport sociology and the University of Jyväskylä’s longstanding expertise in the field.
The conference attracted 371 participants from 42 countries, providing a platform for researchers and experts to share knowledge, discuss current issues, and strengthen international collaboration. As an addition to the main program, paticipants had an oppurtunity to get to know Finnish culture. They were introduced to Finnish pesäpallo at Hippos, got to go to the world’s biggest smoke sauna in Laukaa and kayak on the lake. The conference dinner took place at beautiful Juurikkasaari, where attendees traveled by cruise.
Feedback from participants was highly positive. Attendees praised the welcoming atmosphere, the campus setting, and the efforts of the local organizing team and volunteers. The high-quality research presentations, opportunities for international networking, and engaging social programme were also widely appreciated.
For the organizers, Jyväskylä proved to be an excellent host city. The beautiful Seminaarinmäki Campus and its surroundings provided an ideal setting for a successful and memorable international conference.
