What’s going on in Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä is a very lively and active city with events organised all year round. The city is one of the most popular places for organising fairs in Finland and a significant congress city. In Jyväskylä, the amount of events of various sizes organised annually reaches 6 000, starting from international events that affects tens of thousands people up to minor local pop-up events.

The second largest outdoor event in the Nordic countries, Rally Finland, the oldest, continuously organised city festival in the Nordic countries, Jyväskylä Summer, the City of Light Event, Suomipop Festival and Finlandia Marathon are examples of those mega-events organised in Jyväskylä.

Jyväskylä is known as the Capital of Sport in Finland. In addition to Rally Finland, several sports competition at the world championship and Finnish championship levels are organised annually in the city along with other events related to physical activities. The Sports and Wellbeing Centre and Centre of Expertise, Hippos (with its fields and halls), Harjun Stadion (Harju Stadium) and the Centre of Outdoor Activities, Laajavuori that all are located near the city centre, provide a variety of opportunities for both summer and winter events.

Cultural life in Jyväskylä is best described as highly diverse. The cultural offering extends from edgy happenings put on by students through to high culture. Citizens pride themselves in the symphony orchestra, Jyväskylä Sinfonia, which consists of professional musicians from a number of different countries. The city also boasts numerous choirs and theatre companies, of which many have tasted international success. Concerts in Jyväskylä are arranged both indoors and outdoors and different theatres, for instance Jyväskylä City Theatre, stage productions of a high standard
