Jyväskylä info for tutors

Grab the tips from Visit Jyväskylä Region’s tourist information for tutors.

Hi tutor,

A cheerful greeting from Visit Jyväskylä Region’s tourist information!

It’s wonderful that you’ve decided to become a tutor. Whether you were born in Jyväskylä or moved here later, you are an important link between Jyväskylä and new students. Here are a few things that would be useful for someone starting their studies in Jyväskylä to know.

By the way, do you know what the words “linkki,” “taksari,” and “kolkki” used by the people of Jyväskylä mean?

Jyväskylä in general

Jyväskylä [ˈjyʋæs̠ˌk̟ylæ] is the seventh largest city in Finland, with nearly 150,000 residents. It is one of Finland’s most vibrant event cities, the capital of architect Alvar Aalto, and is sometimes referred to as the “Athens of Finland.” Jyväskylä has a long history as a school city and is a popular student city. Notable people from Jyväskylä include writer Minna Canth, ski jumping legend Matti Nykänen, and rap artist Gettomasa. You can find more information about Jyväskylä here.

Palces to visiti

Kompassi (Kauppakatu 33) is a great place to meet friends and continue to the numerous services on Kauppakatu. From the city center, it’s a ten-minute walk to the Nero Steps (Yliopistonkatu 18), which we count to be 119 steps. These are suitable for stair workouts as well as crossing Harju to the Vesilinna Tower (Ihantolantie 5), where you can admire Jyväskylä from the observation deck.

For those who enjoy culture, it’s worth recommending Alvar Aalto sites, including the University of Jyväskylä area (Seminaarinkatu 15), the City Theatre (Vapaudenkatu 36), the Aalto2 Museum Center (Alvar Aallon katu 7), and the Säynätsalo Town Hall (Parviaisentie 9, Säynätsalo). The performances at the City Theatre and the concerts by the Jyväskylä Symphony offer many experiences and are quite affordable for students!

For sports fans, it’s worth mentioning Harju Stadium (Ihantolantie 3), JYP‘s home arena LähiTapiola Areena (Rautpohjankatu 10), and the Laajavuori Ski Center (Laajavuorentie 15), which also offers various activities during the snow-free season. The Rantaraitti (around Lake Jyväsjärvi) is excellent for outdoor activities and exercise, with a full length of 12.7 kilometers. Along the route, you’ll find various sports facilities, such as the Satama CrossFit outdoor gym, where everyone can train freely. In winter, you can walk, skate, or ski on the ice of Lake Jyväsjärvi.
