Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 3

“‘The idea comes from outside me – and it is like a gift. Then I take the idea and make it my own – that is where the skill lies.’”

Johannes Brahms, who ranks among the giants of music history, is a true composer of paradoxes: he firmly believed in the power and greatness of classical forms during the Romantic era, when the rules and boundaries of music were constantly being pushed further and further. He achieved great fame, honour, and wealth already in his lifetime, yet lived modestly and spent his money only on the manuscripts of Bach and other old masters. He was a sharp-edged and informal personality, who famously grew his beard simply to avoid wearing a tie, yet whose music radiates an almost stoic balance, harmony, and inner light.

The winner of last year’s Juhani Heinonen Violin Competition, Leea Mattila, Jyväskylä Sinfonia’s principal cellist Ilkka Kauppi, and chief conductor Lorenzo Passerini invite you on a deep dive into Brahms’s musical universe, where simple richness and understated expressiveness warm the soul like a well-aged vintage wine. And the old will feel young again!
