Sustainable Jyväskylä Region
The Jyväskylä Region is known for its spectacular nature and cultural provision, which attract visitors from around the world. The region’s four national parks and 3,700 lakes, Alvar Aalto’s architecture, the traditional and more distinctive saunas, and its Unesco sites are all part of a precious natural and cultural heritage which we all have a responsibility to preserve. Pure nature and vibrant urban culture must be cherished, which is why a sense of responsibility along with sustainable tourism have been placed at the heart of the area’s development.
Here you can find information about responsible travel destinations in the Jyväskylä Region, the responsibility effort co-ordinated by Visit Jyväskylä Region, and sense of responsibility as part of the region’s tourism strategy.

Spa holidaymakers, on the other hand, can head to Hotel Keurusselka in Keuruu, which, in addition to relaxation, offers plenty of opportunities for active holidays.
Outside the built-up areas, eco-friendly accommodation is offered by, for example, tranquil Nukula on the shores of North Päijänne, or Piispala in Kannonkoski, which is suitable for the needs of larger groups as well. Both operators were granted the Sustainable Travel Finland certificate in 2022.
Dining
Responsible food is the product of pure local raw ingredients and the avoidance of unnecessary waste. In the Jyväskylä Region, you can enjoy locally-produced seasonal raw ingredients and fresh flavours all year round.
Local food is served at, for instance, the Patapirtti restaurant in Jämsä. The restaurant offers a wide range of local and organic foods, including vegan alternatives. In the centre of Jyväskylä, vegan food fans can also head for lunch to Katriina, a vegetarian restaurant. There are also over 120 places to eat in the area which sell rescued food at a reduced price in order to minimise waste.
Destinations and activities
Responsible destinations offer inspiring experiences for tourists and locals without harming nature and the cultural environment.
Säynätsalo Town Hall, awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland brand, is one of architect Alvar Aalto’s most significant works and is also shortlisted as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The operators of the historic municipal hall consciously develop activities in such a way that the surrounding community, residents and other entrepreneurs feel safe and enjoy the opportunity to run their businesses and benefit from the uniqueness and attractiveness of the area. The site is also certified as autism-friendly and part of the We Speak Gay partnership network.
Tavinsulka, which offers open water sports and waterway tourism nurtures the development of the Jyväskylä Region’s water networks and advances sustainable nature tourism. The company is Sustainable Travel Finland-certified, and its operations take into account the protection of both nature and the cultural environment in a variety of ways, from procurement to customer guidance and co-operation projects.
Responsibility is part of the Jyväskylä Region’s tourism strategy
Developing responsibility sometimes requires a balancing act and making difficult decisions.
A lot of emissions are generated by travel, but on the other hand, tourism also creates new jobs, increases the vitality of regions, and enables, for example, funding for the maintenance of nature trails and national parks. Visit Jyväskylä Region is committed to developing responsible tourism in the region and supports local travel entrepreneurs in their responsibility-based work.
The tourism area is involved in the nationwide Sustainable Travel Finland programme, the goal of which is to highlight and develop sustainable tourism throughout the nation. After fulfilling the programme’s seven criteria, participating companies are awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) label as proof of their commitment to sustainability work. The brand also helps to identify the responsible tourism operators in the Jyväskylä Region. Over 50 of the region’s enterprises have become part of the programme, and a growing number of these companies have already obtained STF certification. Acquaint yourself with the stories of the responsibility work the region’s STF-certified companies have taken on.
In addition to national training and development programmes, the region has also actively co-operated with local companies, educational institutions and other actors. In the Making the Responsibility of Tourism Visible in the Jyväskylä Region project, a joint style of responsibility-based communication and a checklist for developing the cyber security of companies in the tourism field were, for instance, created. Our set goal is to continue working with responsibility-related themes and work together for the Jyväskylä Region to make it a “shining example of a responsible and internationally successful nature-, adventure- and cultural-based tourism area, renowned for its good accessibility and active co-operation”.
Visit Jyväskylä Region environmental responsibility
Visit Jyväskylä Region is the official DMO (Destination Management Organization) of Central Finland, whose purpose is to support the region’s businesses and to develop the visibility of the entire region in the tourism field. We promote responsibility-based expertise and awareness in both our co-operative networks and internally in our own operations. We are committed to conserving natural resources and have completed the Ecocompass environmental programme to support our activities for responsible development.
The Ecocompass helps organisations to identify the environmental impacts of their own operations and to find concrete tools to reduce them. The fulfilment of goals is monitored by a designated environmental officer, who also actively participates in training events dealing with sustainable tourism. All personnel are committed to the systematic development of environmental work and conceive new measures together as support for these goals. At the moment, special attention is being paid to the development of operations for, e.g. the reduction of brochure waste, making procurement environmentally friendly, and organising responsibility-related training.
