1. Relax in the world’s largest smoke sauna or an igloo sauna

A visit to a sauna is an essential part of any summer holiday in Finland. And there’s no better place to experience it than the Jyväskylä Region, the Sauna Region of the World, where both traditional and unique saunas await every type of traveller.

Imagine unwinding in the gentle heat of the world’s largest smoke sauna at Tupaswilla. Or perhaps you’d prefer the the igloo sauna at Revontuli Lakeland Village, or a selection of saunas and pampering treatments by the foaming rapids at Varjola. If an urban sauna experience is more your style, Sataman Viilu in Jyväskylä’s harbour offers three saunas, hot tubs and even a lake pool – a perfect blend of city atmosphere and authentic Finnish relaxation.

2. Admire the world famous architecture of Alvar Aalto

Walking through the streets of Jyväskylä, the visitor quickly becomes acquainted with the world-famous architecture of Alvar Aalto. Nowhere else in the world will you find as many of his works from different periods – 29 buildings in total, plus a wooden motorboat designed by Aalto himself. Aalto’s connection to Jyväskylä is unmistakable: he spent much of his childhood here, went to school, started a family and launched the career that would later redefine Nordic design. A perfect place to begin your journey into Aalto’s world is the Aalto2 Museum Centre. For Aalto enthusiasts —and those who’d like to become one — the perfect place to stay is the Aalto‑themed room at the Yöpuu Boutique Hotel. Another great option is Hotel Alba, perfectly located near the Aalto2 Museum Centre.

The Jyväskylä Region is also home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Petäjävesi Old Church, built by peasant farmers between 1763 and 1765, is a masterpiece of traditional timber construction. Meanwhile, the Oravivuori Triangulation Point of the Struve Geodetic Arc offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s scientific heritage and its impressive Lakeland landscape.

3. Spend a summer day enjoying Finland’s longest and deepest lake

In the Jyväskylä Region you are located in the middle of stunningly beautiful Lakeland Finland and Europe’s most extensive integrated lake area. In the Jyväskylä Region you will have the chance to enjoy the thousand lakes in a variety ways. How about a canoe trip on the calm waters of Lake Päijänne or a cruise on Lake Päijänne on a century-old steamboat from Päijänne-Risteilyt Hilden, admiring the surrounding lake scenery?

The Jyväskylä Region boasts four national parks offering visitors the opportunity to experience Finnish nature in all its diversity. Their trails take visitors up ridges of sighing pines, to the shores of sparkling blue lakes, through vast bogs, fascinating rock fields, wilderness forests and foaming rapids. There are countless ways to explore these landscapes: join a guided or self‑guided hike, paddle through a national park by canoe or on a scenic cruise, or take to the trails on a mountain bike. Some of the routes are also accessible, making the parks welcoming to all visitors.

5. Visit Europe’s coolest city Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä is a vibrant city of 150,000 residents – and with almost one in three people being a student, it has an energy all of its own. Here you’ll find fascinating museums, the world’s largest collection of Alvar Aalto architecture, charming hotels and plenty of cosy cafés and restaurants to linger in. Wander through the idyllic 19th‑century wooden quarter of Toivola Old Courtyard, or head to the lively harbour with its restaurants, terraces, water activities, saunas and year-round events. And despite the city buzz, nature is always just a few steps away. It’s no wonder Jyväskylä, the capital of the region, earned a spot on the Sunday Times list of Europe’s most interesting places to visit!

For those who prefer to be even closer to nature, Luontovire’s forest accommodations offer a peaceful retreat among whispering pines and soft moss underfoot.

7. Discover rock art older than the Egyptian pyramids

Everyone knows that the famous Egyptian pyramids are thousands of years old. Less well known is the fact that in the Jyväskylä Region you can discover history that is even older than that. The oldest ones of the Saraakallio Rock Paintings on a 40-metre-high rock formation are up to 7.000 years old. They form the largest contiguous area of paintings in Fennoscandia. In summer the paintings can be seen from the deck of the Päijänne-Risteilyt Hilden cruise ship, or on a canoe or kayak tour. At Peurunka Spa & Resort you can enjoy the Saraakallio themed sauna.
