Still I Can is an intensive monologue play about the visual artist Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861–1919), who belonged to that pioneering generation of Finnish women artists who studied in Paris and created an independent, international career. She lived a headstrong life, broke the usual boundaries and served as an example of the independent “new woman”. Still I Can is a monologue about an artist who refuses to remain in the shadow of men, marriage or oblivion.
The monologue performance based on Heikki Lund’s text is brought to Jyväskylä by Nadja Tuoriniemi. Tuoriniemi is a poet and theater maker who spent her childhood and youth in Central Finland, and her sensitive and powerful touch brings the great historical figure to life on the cozy and immediate stage of Teatteri Villa Valo.
