SIGNET – Olga Knipper, Anton Chekhov and 857 Love Letters is a tapestry of love, longing and glimmers of hope. The performance originated from the intense correspondence between the legendary playwright Anton Chekhov and his wife, the actress Olga Knipper, in the late nineteenth century. Despite their passionate love, circumstances kept them apart: while Olga’s career was rising in Moscow, Anton was tending to his failing health in Yalta. After Anton’s untimely death, Olga lived on for more than fifty years, never remarrying. The couple left behind more than 800 letters, through which their story is brought vividly to life on stage.
The performance brings together a trio consisting of actor–pianist Elina Mustonen, pianist–composer Olli Mustonen, and director–dramaturge Johanna Freundlich. The piano music of the work is heard both as a studio recording performed by Olli Mustonen and as live music played by Elina Mustonen — at times intertwining the two. All the music featured in the performance has been composed by Olli Mustonen specifically for this production. The result is a unique performance in which spoken word and music playfully interact across their different sources.
