Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (orch. Maurice Ravel)
Modest Mussorgsky became so completely captivated by an exhibition of drawings and paintings by his friend Viktor Hartmann that he produced, in just a couple of months, a monumental piano suite depicting the exhibition. The subjects of the “pictures” range from old castles and catacombs to bustling market scenes and unhatched baby chicks, but Mussorgsky’s expressive power and vivid animation of visual motifs burst forth with such irresistible force that it is no wonder the suite has inspired orchestrators ever since, beginning with the master of orchestral colour, Maurice Ravel. Mussorgsky–Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition grows into a cavalcade of visions more spectacular than film or musical theatre, offering something for every listener to fall in love with.
Perfectly alongside it sits Hollywood’s Golden Age court composer Erich Korngold’s glamorous violin concerto, as well as a post-romantic nocturnal surge of drama by leading contemporary composer Anna Clyne. Add to this Isabelle van Keulen’s radiant violin artistry, Karen Kamensek’s ironclad leadership, and a major collaboration with the Kuopio Orchestra!
