A hundred years have passed since the birth of the Saarijärvi artist and graphic artist Frans Toikkanen this year. The anniversary year is celebrated with the Days of Cats exhibition at Galleria Ratamo.
Toikkanen was particularly known for his cat-themed graphic works executed in the mezzotint technique. The artist’s observations of cats are attentive, insightful and humorous. The works are compelling and evoke thoughts even in those who do not consider themselves cat people. In these beloved cats, one can see the kind of subtle features and observations of these whiskered companions that only an artist who has observed cats for a long time can capture.
Toikkanen, who was born in Saarijärvi and worked there his entire life, began his artistic career in the early 1950s. His first exhibition was seen in Lahti in 1952, and he received international recognition when he represented Finland at International Biennial of Graphic Art in 1972. In 1982, he was awarded the prestigious Pro Finlandia Medal in recognition of his significant contribution to Finnish visual arts.
The works in the exhibition have been compiled from the art collections of the City of Jyväskylä, the Jyväskylä Educational Consortium Gradia, the City of Jämsä, the City of Keuruu, the Municipality of Uurainen, and a private collection. The exhibition has been realized in collaboration with art history master’s student Eveliina Perttunen.
