After earning a master’s degree in education, Minkkinen’s career path took a multifaceted turn from music education to illustrating album covers and children’s songbooks, until she discovered a passion for ceramics during a course at an adult education center. Birds became her subject because she was fascinated by the idea of capturing a delicate and dynamic form in hard, cold clay. Each bird sculpted by Minkkinen is a unique individual from which stories emerge. Together, the birds form a beautiful flock of many species.
The bird themes extend to other aspects of ceramic art in the exhibition. From birds, the focus shifts to birdbaths, which in turn evoke thoughts of nature and the garden. There is plenty of joy and vitality.
