Elina Mustonen’s performance, I, Elizabeth – An Absolute Monarch in Crisis, breaks new ground in its fresh blending of theatre and the classical concert tradition. The acclaimed production draws extensively on Elizabeth’s own texts and documents.
Elizabeth I must sign the death warrant of her cousin Mary Stuart, and the crisis is not only personal but also political and religious. But how does the decision affect Elizabeth herself? How does she manage to justify it morally? How can she make the decision appear as a necessity — the only possible course of action — above all to herself? Elizabeth was known to be a gifted musician and a great lover of music. In this performance, she seeks to resolve her inner conflict through music: how to be at once a sensitive and feeling individual, yet also a determined and merciless ruler?
