Welcome on a journey through time into the very heart of Finnish steamboat heritage on Friday, July 3, 2026, from 18:00 to 21:00, departing from Jyväskylä!
Built during the winter of 1905–1906 and launched in 1906, the legendary s/s Suomi is now celebrating her 120th summer on the waves of Lake Päijänne. To honor this anniversary year, s/s Suomi invites you on a theme cruise that brings together Finnish culinary and musical traditions, nostalgia, and the authentic atmosphere of a classic steamboat.
The evening’s entertainment features the kupletti (traditional Finnish comic song) duo Maitopojat, known for their joyful and warm-hearted performances. Their repertoire blends shellac-era classics, hilarious stories, and their own fresh comic songs. Maitopojat will perform beloved tunes by legendary Finnish artists such as Hiski Salomaa, Jaakko Teppo, Veikko Lavi, and Repe Helismaa—not forgetting the duo’s own humorous numbers. Between songs, they will share colorful stories about Finnish masters of the kupletti genre and the origins of the music. The atmosphere will be warm, full of laughter, and guaranteed to entertain.
During the cruise, you can also explore an onboard exhibition detailing the long history of s/s Suomi on the waters of Lake Päijänne. Few vessels carry as many Finnish summer memories, travel stories, and steamboat traditions. Did you know, for instance, that the world-renowned architect Alvar Aalto used to travel to Säynätsalo aboard the Suomi?
You will also have the chance to chat with the Captain and the Chief Engineer, offering a glimpse into the daily life of a steamboat on the bridge and in the engine room. Please remember to ask for permission before entering, ensuring the crew’s work and our safe journey can continue smoothly.
