LGBTQI+ Rights and Travel in Finland

In Finland, same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1971. Same-sex marriage and full joint adoption rights have been legal since 2017. Finland also has comprehensive anti-discrimination laws covering both sexual orientation and gender identity.

Since April 2023, adults in Finland can legally change their gender based on self-determination, without needing sterilization or a medical diagnosis. Finland recognizes an X gender marker for passports, but travellers should check entry requirements for countries they plan to visit afterwards, as some have specific rules for X-marked passports.

Finland consistently ranks among the safest countries for queer travellers. The majority of Finns support equal rights for LGBTQI+ people, and the atmosphere is generally open and welcoming, especially in larger cities. Finland’s main LGBTQI+ organization, SETA, has been advocating for LGBTQI+ rights since 1974 and offers information, peer support, and community events throughout the country. Many cities host annual Pride celebrations, with Helsinki Pride being the largest and Jyväskylä Pride also growing in popularity.

Public services, accommodation providers, and healthcare staff treat all travelers equally, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
