Iso Haapasaari nature trail
Iso Haapasaari is an island over a kilometer long and at most only 200 meters wide, located next to Haapaniemi in Vaajakoski. The highest point of the island is just over 25 meters above the surface of Lake Päijänne. The starting point of the nature trail, with its information board, is in the southern part of the island. Parking spaces are located along Haapasaarentie, immediately after the junction that turns towards the nature trail's information board.
Description
The nature trail runs almost entirely through a nature reserve that was protected in 2014. Walking is allowed in the nature reserve even outside the trails. Berry picking and collecting edible mushrooms are permitted.
Please remember that the following activities are prohibited in the nature reserve:
Camping
Making fires anywhere other than the designated fire pit marked on the nature trail map
Capturing, killing, disturbing animals, and destroying nests
Using motor vehicles
The nature trail route, established in 2006, is 2.7 km long. The recommended direction is counterclockwise. Through the connecting path in the middle of the island, hikers can choose different loop options. The fire pit on the west shore is close to the trail in all options. There is no firewood supply at the fire pit. The principle of litter-free hiking is followed on Jyväskylä's nature trails. Please take your trash with you to sort at home. There are 12 checkpoint boards along the route. The Opinsauna kiln, classified as an ancient monument, requires a separate visit. Due to the narrowness of the island, you will feel like you are almost always near the water. The terrain can be traversed with outdoor shoes in dry weather. The elevation changes are moderate, making the route easy to walk. In the northern part of the island, the nature trail runs close to a cliff. Please be mindful of the cliff, especially when walking with children.
Please remember that dogs must be kept on a leash on the nature trail and in the nature reserve all year round! The nature trail is not maintained in winter. The nature trail is not intended for cycling.
