Description
The Old Church Loop is an 8.5 km long ring route starting from Kauppala. The route mostly runs in the terrain and on quiet dirt roads, but it also includes an approximately 3 km section along the edge of a public road, where hikers are advised to exercise general caution. For families with children, the route can easily be shortened by walking from Sahanranta to the Old Church and back (totaling 4.5 km), which is a very popular alternative. Conversely, the route can be lengthened by combining it with the Lieroinen Loop.
The loop circles through the cultural landscapes of Pihlajavesi, passing through Asemankylä and Sahankylä to the Pihlajavesi Old Church, which has been titled Finland's most mystical church. The cruciform church, also known as the wilderness church, was originally built without permission using the resources of ten houses and four crofts, 70 years before the region got its first road. The shadows of the church people etched into the walls of the church—built with the grit of the forest folk—still remind us of past times.
From the church, the route returns to Asemankylä along Valkeajärventie road. This road, with its historic buildings, represents a provincially valuable and beautiful built cultural environment. Notable points of interest and services along the route include Kauppala (cafe and shopping), Koipikangas Stadium & Disc Golf, Sahanranta, Mämmikoski Rapids, and the Church Canal.
