The Seminaarinmäki campus of the University of Jyväskylä is a unique ensemble where the red-brick teacher training college buildings of the 1880s meet the modern campus architecture designed by Alvar Aalto in the 1950s. The campus ensemble designed by Alvar Aalto is part of Aalto Works, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Aalto won the competition to expand the area in 1951 with his proposal, URBS. Based on the American campus principle, the ensemble forms an open arc around the sports field and includes the main building, library, teacher training school, dining hall and student accommodation buildings, gymnasiums and swimming pool. The Student Union Building and the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences building were later added to the area. The layered and protected Seminaarinmäki campus has also been awarded the European Heritage Label.
Public guided tours
During the summer, Aalto2 organises public guided tours of the Seminaarinmäki university campus in Jyväskylä in Finnish and English. Participation in the tours is only possible with a ticket purchased in advance. The guided tour lasts approximately 90 minutes, after which you can explore the area independently if you wish.
