Admire the lighting installations in the City of Light

In the dark season, the City of Light, Jyväskylä, glows in a magnificent way. You will find over 100 permanent lighting sites in the city, such as bridges, building facades, and artworks. Admire landmarks like the Harju Tower, Kuokkala Bridge, or Matti Nykänen’s ski jump, which stand out in their evening lighting. During Christmas, the upper part of Jyväskylä’s Church Park is taken over by the fairy-tale-like Christmas Light Land.

Experience winter activities

Jyväskylä Region offers excellent facilities for various winter activities. The area has several ski resorts, such as Himos, which was recently chosen as the ski resort of the year. In the Jyväskylä Region, you can hit the slopes even in winters with less snow. There are also hundreds of kilometers of ski trails available. On the first snow trails, you can put on your skis as early as November. Once the ice has strengthened, you can go ice skating, for example, right next to the center of Jyväskylä at the Lutakko harbor. Or perhaps you want to experience a unique adventure floating in icy cold water with a warm flotation suit, enjoy the tranquility of a national park with snowshoes on, or go on a snowmobile safari?

Explore winter nature on a hike

Hiking is also possible in winter when you take weather conditions and possible slipperiness on the trails into account. You can enjoy the snowy nature with snowshoes on your feet or by skiing, for example, on the hiking trail in Leivonmäki National Park.

Spot stars and northern lights

As the evenings darken, one can admire the beautifully twinkling starry sky and the northern lights, which are seen in Jyväskylä Region about every fourth night. One of the darkest areas in southern Finland is located in Jyväskylä Region, in Hankasalmi. Hankasalmi has been a global center for aurora and star research for over forty years.

In the World Sauna Region, Jyväskylä Region, you can enjoy the gentle warmth of the sauna all year round. In the cold of winter, the warm steam feels especially relaxing.
