Pihlajavesi Wilderness Church

In 1780, the Pihlajavesi Wilderness Church was erected with the resources of ten houses and four tenant farms. The designer and builder at the time was Matti Åkerblom, who created the wooden church in the embrace of the forest.

The walls of the church are empty of paintings, and no decorative ornaments have been drawn on the ceiling. You can see mystical shadows of the church-goers on the church walls. In the entrance hall, visitors are greeted by a sight of stocks and a pauper boy alms box that, in their own way, speak of the history of the area.

The stories of the Pihlajavesi Wilderness Church have been recorded in local culture and history books. In particular, they come to life in a children’s picture book sponsored by the Pihlajavesi chapel parish. The book called “Pihlajaveden erämaakirkon tarinoita” (Stories of the Pihlajavesi Wilderness Church) contains fascinating stories and illustrations that convey the meaning and history of the church to the inhabitants and visitors of the area. The Pihlajavesi Wilderness Church is a place that conceals stories from past centuries.
