Autumn Bucket List – Experience these in the Jyväskylä Region
The crisp days and nature dressed in multiple colors invite you to enjoy the autumn season in the Jyväskylä Region. Discover national parks and outdoor activities, immerse yourself in events, admire the City of Light and world-renowned architecture, or relax in the warmth of a sauna.
This autumn bucket list gathers the must-experience highlights in the Jyväskylä Region!
Spot the City of Light’s illuminated landmarks
As the evening darkens, the City of Light, Jyväskylä, glows magnificently. Harju Tower, Kuokkala Bridge, Matti Nykänen’s ski jump, and other illuminated landmarks warmly welcome visitors to the city. In total, Jyväskylä boasts over a hundred permanent lighting installations: bridges, artworks, and building facades. How many can you spot during your holiday?
The beloved City of Light event is held from the 25th of September to 3rd of October, 2026. During the event, the city will be filled with stunning light art installations.
Experience Finland’s Nature in miniature
The Jyväskylä Region is like Finland’s nature in miniature. In the region’s four national parks, you can hike through ridge, lake, and marsh landscapes, among rugged cliffs, or surrounded by ancient pine forests. You can also enjoy the region’s nature on its many nature trails, such as Muuramenjoki Nature Trail in Muurame, the Singing Ogre’s Trail in Äänekoski, or the Nyrölä Nature Trail in Jyväskylä.
Explore the Capital of Alvar Aalto
Did you know that Jyväskylä and its surrounding areas have more works by world-renowned architect Alvar Aalto than anywhere else in the world? The 30 Aalto sites include the Säynätsalo Town Hall, which The New York Times has chosen as one of the most significant works of post-war architecture. The new gem of Aalto’s capital is the Aalto2 Museum Centre, which combines the Alvar Aalto Museum and the Museum of Central Finland under one roof. At the Lutakko Harbor in Jyväskylä, you can admire Aalto’s self-designed wooden boat.
You can explore Aalto’s Jyväskylä through self-guided tours that are ready for you to follow.
Relax in the Saunas of the World’s Sauna Region
Does the crisp autumn air feel tight on your skin? No worries – in the World’s Sauna Region, the Jyväskylä Region, you can enjoy the gentle warmth of a sauna all year round. Sweat it out, for example, in a public sauna sheltered by century-old brick walls, in atmospheric smoke saunas, or even in an igloo sauna.
Jog, Cycle, Paddle…
In the Sports Capital of Jyväskylä, it’s easy to enjoy an active holiday. Jog around the Rantaraitti, a lakeside trail around Lake Jyväsjärvi, a favorite among locals. You’ll break a sweat, especially at the many outdoor gyms along the trail. You can also get a solid workout on the Harju stairs near the city center. In addition to jogging routes, the Jyväskylä Region offers excellent opportunities for other activities: go cycling through the region’s varied terrain or enjoy paddling in nature adorned with autumn colors.
Admire the Views in UNESCO Landscapes
A kilometer-long uphill trail, a climb to the triangulation tower, and before you lies a breathtaking view of Lake Päijänne. The Struve Geodetic Arc point at Oravivuori in Korpilahti, Jyväskylä, is one of the Jyväskylä Region’s UNESCO World Heritage sites and a great place to marvel at the region’s stunning lake views. There are other scenic spots to admire the views as well, such as the views from the top of Kanavuori or Harju Tower in the Jyväskylä Region.
