Matti Nykänen’s hill

A ski jumping stadium comprised of five hills is located in Laajavuori, Jyväskylä. One of the hills is named after Jyväskylä-born ski jumping legend Matti Nykänen as “Nykänen’s hill” or “Nykänen’s ramp”. Introduced in 1965, the hill was given its current name after Nykänen succeeded in the 1988 Calgary Olympics by winning three Olympic gold medals. Matti Nykänen’s hill now enjoys a magnificent permanent lighting.

Nykänen’s Hill has recently been provided with spectacular permanent lighting that beautifully honours the memory of Matti Nykänen. The illumination is programmable, which means that it can be changed in accordance with events and holidays. The basic lighting program is named The Jumper: a brilliant turquoise blue light climbs up the ski jump tower, moves to the jump spot, and then descends the hill. After that, the lighting changes vividly and is reminiscent of the atmosphere associated with the northern lights and fallen snow. 

In the summertime, you can stop at the hill café at the base of the ski jump tower, where you can enjoy freshly baked cinnamon rolls and ice cream. Hyppyrimäki Observation Tower is also worth a visit to admire a wonderful panoramic view of Jyväskylä. The observation tower and hill café are maintained by the Jyväskylä Skiing Association.
