Muuratsalo experimental house (1952–54)
Alvar Aalto’s summer residence – also known as Muuratsalo Experimental House – is located on an island five kilometres from Säynätsalo Town Hall. Its courtyard is enclosed by two residential wings and a brick wall. In the south, the brick wall has an opening with a view of Lake Päijänne. The guest room wing and woodshed are located behind the main building, in line with a slope of rock. When designing Muuratsalo Experimental House, Aalto experimented with various materials, techniques, forms and dimensions. He also intended to try solar heating.
Opening hours:
Closed during the winter season. Entrance to the area is only permitted in the company of a guide.
