Nikolainkulma

The building located in the center of Jyväskylä, now known as Nikolainkulma, is a significant part of Jyväskylä’s cultural history and one of the few old wooden buildings in the city center.

The construction of the building, completed in 1899, was commissioned by restaurateur Nikolai Wahlgren, though the designer of the building is unknown. The impressive wooden building served as a hotel and restaurant for decades; first as Hotel Wahlgren and later as City Hotel. During the war years, the premises housed a military hospital. In addition to hotel and restaurant operations, the building has housed, for example, a clothing store, a dentist, and a delicatessen. The Provincial Government of Jyväskylä has also operated from the building.

The most famous tenant of Nikolainkulma was Alvar Aalto. After graduating as an architect, Aalto returned to Jyväskylä and established his first office, the Office of Architecture and Monumental Art Alvar Aalto, in a space rented from the building in 1923. The building was named Nikolainkulma in 1999 when it turned 100 years old. Today, Nikolainkulma houses event and meeting spaces.
