Outdoor Express – Leivonmäki National Park

On summer weekends, Outdoor Express offers a fast connection from Jyväskylä city centre to the national parks of Leivonmäki, Pyhä-Häkki, and Southern Konnevesi. You’ll have plenty of time for hiking once you arrive. Explore on your own or take advantage of the park’s services. The transport also makes overnight stays possible.

Buying tickets

  • Tickets are on sale in the Matkahuolto service and must be purchased 20 minutes before the departure of the service.
  • Tickets are not sold on the bus!
  • Outdoor Express transports depart from Jyväskylä Travel CenterHannikaisenkatu 20, Jyväskylä.
  • Outdoor Express tickets can be combined through the Matkahuolto ticket shop for transfers with local bus Linkki, train, or long-distance bus.

Leivonmäki National Park trails

Leivonmäki National Park enchants its visitors with its diverse landscapes, where ridges, lakes, and mires create a unique natural mosaic. The Koskikara Nature Trail, which starts from Rutalahti, is 3.5 km long, and the Harjunkierros (4.5 km) and Mäyränkierros (5.5 km) trails starting from the Selänpohja parking lot offer stunning scenery and diverse nature experiences. Leivonmäki National Park also features the Harjujärvi demanding accessible route. There are several campfire sites in the park. A good overnight trail is the Rutalahti trail.

More tips for Leivonmäki National Park

On Outdoor Express weekends, café services are available in Leivonmäki National Park at the Selänpohja parking area and at the Letkaliiteri in Rutalahti. Visitor information is also provided at Selänpohja. On Finnish Nature Day on 29 August, the Metsälaulajaiset singing event takes place at the Selänpohja parking area, and Rutalahti’s countryside market will be held on 26 September 2026 at Letkaliiteri. Outdoor Express transport also makes it easy to take part in these events.

In Pyhä-Häkki National Park, café services are available during Outdoor Express weekends. The park celebrates its 70th anniversary on 12 September, with Metsähallitus on site offering hiking tips and guidance.

Accessibility

Outdoor Express to Leivonmäki National Park routes are accessible. Places are limited. Purchasing a wheelchair ticket is done normally through Matkahuolto’s ticket sales system. Make a reservation before purchasing a ticket by calling 020 743 8310 or sending an email to [email protected]. When making the reservation, please indicate whether a wheelchair space is needed in the passenger area or if the assisted person can sit on the bus seat. This affects the number of available seats in the bus. The assistant has free access when you inform about this during confirmation. Reservations must be made at least 2 days before the departure.

Please arrive 15 minutes before departure time to ensure a smooth departure.

Leivonmäki National Park also features the Harjujärvi demanding accessible route.

 

About the service

Outdoor Express is a service that connects city centers and national parks. The operation particularly enriches the experience of tourists and increases the attractiveness and accessibility of national park destinations among local residents without cars. The Outdoor Express service concept has been launched as a collaboration between Ekokumppanit Oy and Visit Tampere. Nature trips have been successfully operated since 2022 – in the 2025 season, the service will expand to Central Finland as part of the Sustainable International Accessibility for Central Finland Tourism project. Outdoor Express won the 2024 Tourism Innovation of the Year award at the Finnish Travel Gala.

The Outdoor Express Jyväskylä Region service is implemented by the Sustainable International Accessibility for Central Finland Tourism (KeKaSa) project, managed by Visit Jyväskylä Region under the city of Jyväskylä. The project is co-financed by the European Union. The funding has been granted by the Regional Council of Central Finland.
