Arriving to Jyväskylä from Helsinki

Helsinki Airport serves as the main international gateway to Finland, and from there the most sustainable way to continue your journey to Jyväskylä is by train, long‑distance bus or plane. These connections are frequent and offer smooth links onward through the region.

Finland can also be reached by ferry through several international passenger ports in Helsinki. Ferries arrive from Tallinn/Estonia, Sweden/Stockholm, and Travemünde/Germany, offering multiple alternative entry routes for travellers arriving by sea.

Getting to Jyväskylä from Helsinki

You can get to Helsinki by plane or by boat and from Helsinki, you can get to Jyväskylä by train, bus, car or plane. The journey takes somewhere between 1-4 hours depending on the chosen form of transport.

By train

Schedules and tickets:
Trains from Helsinki to Jyväskylä leave directly from the airport with one or two changes. First, take a local commuter train (I or P) and change to a long-distance connection at Tikkurila or Pasila train station. You can purchase one train ticket for all the connections (local commuter and long-distance train) and check the schedules on the VR website. Download the VR Matkalla –app (Google Play –store / Apple store) for easy travelling. You can see schedules and purchase tickets via the app.

Duration:
The journey from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Jyväskylä takes about 3,5-5 hours depending on the connections.

Station location:
Helsinki-Vantaa Airport’s train station is located under the terminal, with direct elevator and escalator connection from the departures and arrivals hall to the train station.

Trains from Helsinki to the Jyväskylä Region will stop at Jämsä, Jyväskylä and Hankasalmi train stations.

By bus

There are two types of bus options to reach Jyväskylä from the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. There are a few direct bus connections from the Airport to Jyväskylä or you can hop on the local public transport to Helsinki centre and catch a long-distance bus from the Kamppi bus station.

Directly from the airpot

Schedules and tickets:
You can find the bus schedules and buy tickets on the Matkahuolto website.

Duration:
The direct bus journey from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to Jyväskylä takes about 3-4 hours depending on the connection.

Station location:
The airport’s bus station is located right outside the Arrivals hall.

Via Kamppi bus station at Helsinki centre

Schedules and tickets:
Another option is to take the local Commuter train (I or P) or the local bus route 600 from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to Helsinki bus station, called Kamppi. You can search the local transport schedules on the HSL Itinerary search and buy tickets either via the HSL app or from the ticket machine at the train platform. For the long-distance bus from Kamppi, you can find schedules and buy tickets on the Matkahuolto website or app.

Duration:
The local connections from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Kamppi take approximately 50 minutes and the long-distance bus to Jyväskylä takes 3,5-4 hours.

Station location:
Long-distance bus connections to Jyväskylä leave from Kamppi Bus Terminal, located on the bottom floor of the Kamppi Shopping Centre.

By car

From Helsinki you can also travel to the Jyväskylä region by rental car.

Renting:
You have the option to pre-book a rental car by contacting the dealership via phone or through their website. Alternatively, you can rent a car directly at the airport. See the car rental companies available at the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport here.

Duration:
The journey takes about 3 hours, depending on the route you choose.

Service desk locations:
Helsinki-Vantaa Airport hosts numerous car-rental companies, with their service desks conveniently located on the arrivals floor. Rental cars can be easily picked up from parking hall P3.

By plane

Schedules and tickets:
Check the schedules and purchase tickets from the Finnair website. Finnair flies from Helsinki to Jyväskylä twice a day.

Duration:
The Finnair flight from Helsinki to Jyväskylä’s Tikkakoski Airport takes less than an hour.

From Jyväskylä Airport to the city centre:
The Jyväskylä airport is located about 20 kilometres from the city centre. The transfer from Jyväskylä Airport to the centre can be done by taxi or rental car. Please note that the taxi or rental car must be booked in advance. Rental cars can be ordered to Jyväskylä airport from Hertz and Europcar.

Arriving via other cities

You can also fly to Tampere or take a boat to Turku and continue your journey to Jyväskylä by train, bus or car.
