Jyväskylä City Theatre (1964–82)

Administrative and Cultural Center 1964-

Beautifully restored, the Jyväskylä City Theatre presents six to eight premieres each year, alongside a diverse programme of guest performances and collaborative productions. As part of the renovation, completed in the Autumn of 2026, the Small Stage was significantly expanded, transforming from a flexible 95-seat studio space into a 170-seat theatre auditorium with tiered seating. The theatre is now fully accessible, and the new Theatre Restaurant also welcomes lunchtime diners.

The city theatre is one of the designs Alvar Aalto prepared for the city centre of Jyväskylä. Of these designs, the police headquarters, municipal office building and the city theatre have been implemented. The second phase of the administrative centre, which also includes a sculptural council tower, remains to be carried out. Aalto’s designs include a “people’s square” between the tower, theatre and old town hall.
