Kuokkala Church
The bright and compact Kuokkala Church is a unique work of art, with a dark outer carapace that transitions to light-coloured wooden surfaces indoors. The church has won recognition in several architectural competitions. It was designed by Anssi Lassila, Teemu Hirvilammi, and Jani Jansson. The church is located in the middle of Kuokkala square and was consecrated in 2010.
The church’s overall shape is a modernised version of a mediaeval grey stone church, and its materials include granite, Spanish slate, and Finnish spruce board. The church’s artwork is inspired by the theology of the liturgical reform of the Lutheran Mass. The dominant theme of the church is the Bread of Life, which can be seen among other things in the altarpiece designed by artist Pasi Karjula.
In front of the church, a steeple ascends to a 25-metre height, dotted with bells of different sizes. A unique feature of these bells is that their volume can be adjusted.
The church organises events for children, young people, families, and the elderly alike. The church is open during the events and when separately agreed upon. Guidance for groups may be ordered in advance by contacting the sacristan (041 730 1114).
