Many think that life in Finland slows down towards the winter. Not true – at least not in the Jyväskylä Region. You can experience the joys of winter by trying cross-country and downhill skiing, dog sledding, or skating on Lake Jyväsjärvi in the city centre. Those looking for something more extreme can dress for freezing conditions and join a snowmobile safari or go ice-fishing on Lake Päijänne. The most courageous visitors will try swimming in a hole cut in the ice on a frozen lake or snowshoeing in deep snow that glitters in the late winter sun. But remember safety first, always check or ask about the condition of ice tracks on lakes.
The Jyväskylä Region has hundreds of kilometres of ski tracks and dozens of kilometres of illuminated ski tracks. All of these are included in the Jyväskylä Region recreational map, which you can purchase at the Jyväskylä Region Tourist Office (EUR 5). The Laajavuori ski centre has a first-snow track. Ask Jyväskylä Region Tourist Office for more information or visit www.jyvaskylanseutu.fi/kannat/latuinfo (in Finnish).
