Winter activities accessible by public transport

Winter in the Jyväskylä Region is the perfect time for adventure, with the best experiences just a bus ride away. Here, you can enjoy winter activities favoured by locals, even without your own car. Hit the slopes at award-winning ski resorts, take a refreshing dip in an ice hole, or feel the rush of speed on a snowmobile safari. When frost nips at your cheeks and snow softens the landscape, these and many other winter activities are waiting for you.

Sauna & cold plunge

In the Jyväskylä Region, also known as the World’s Sauna Region, you can easily enjoy the gentle steam of saunas and the refreshing sensation of ice holes, even if you don’t have your own car.

Lampila Sauna World, located approximately 5 km from the city centre of Jyväskylä, offers three lakeside saunas, a hot tub, and an ice hole. The smoke sauna is usually heated a few times a month. Lampila is conveniently accessible via Linkki buses from the city centre of Jyväskylä.

Sataman Viilu combines modern design with Finnish sauna culture. Here, you can enjoy an ice hole in Lake Jyväsjärvi, outdoor hot tubs on the terrace and stylish saunas with beautiful lake views. Sataman Viilu is within walking distance of the city centre.

The Himos ski resort in Jämsä (50 km from Jyväskylä) offers a morning sauna and ice hole in winter, as well as the opportunity to experience thrilling ice hole activities. Himos can be reached by long-distance buses that stop at the Himos ramp, or by taking the train to Jämsä and then catching a connecting bus to your destination. Buses operate on Saturdays and during ski vacation weeks, with an extended service on weekdays.

On the shores of Lake Päijänne, on the island of Säynätsalo, Juurikkasaari is a peaceful oasis where a traditional wood sauna and winter swimming offer an experience close to nature. Open Wednesday saunas provide an easy way to enjoy the sauna and ice hole. This destination can be easily reached by Linkki buses from the centre of Jyväskylä.

Ski slopes & sledding hills

In the Jyväskylä Region, the ski slopes and sledding hills are easily accessible by public transport. Laajis, the urban ski centre near Jyväskylä, offers a wide range of slopes for both beginners and experienced skiers. Laajis is easily accessible by Linkki local buses from Jyväskylä.

Himos, located in Jämsä, is the largest ski resort in southern Finland and attracts skiers with its wide range of slopes. Himos can be reached by long-distance buses, which stop at the Himos ramp. Jämsä is also accessible by train, with a connecting bus service available to take you to your final destination. Buses operate on Saturdays and during ski vacation weeks, with an extended service on weekdays.

The Äänemäki ski resort in Äänekoski is an excellent destination for beginners and families with children, thanks to its easy ski lifts and illuminated slopes. It can be reached by taking local buses 140 or 141 from Jyväskylä. From the city center stop to the slopes is about a 15-minute walk.

You can also enjoy snowboarding, downhill skiing and sledding at Paavonrinteet in Saarijärvi, which has five illuminated slopes as well as street and rail features for trick skiers. Paavonrinteet is about an hour’s bus ride from the Jyväskylä Travel Centre.

Ice skating

The Jyväsjärvi ice skating trail offers a unique way to experience winter, located right next to Jyväskylä’s city centre. The 3.2-kilometre-long track, ploughed into the ice, runs through the scenic surroundings of Lake Jyväsjärvi. You can enjoy the track by skating or using kick sleds. Weather permitting, the track is set up each winter and usually opens in January or February.

The track starts near Satamakatu, which is easily accessible on foot or by Linkki buses from the city centre. Skates can be rented from the Satama Café during winter weekends.

Other winter activities

If you’re looking for more excitement, the Jyväskylä Region has plenty of unique, fast-paced activities to offer!

At the Varjola Resort in Laukaa, located on the banks of the Kuusaankoski rapids, you can experience the thrill of a snowmobile safari and arctic floating, as well as gliding across the rapids on a cable. Varjola is easily accessible by Link local buses.

The weekly winter programme at the Himos ski resort (50 km from Jyväskylä) offers a variety of fun activities to enjoy during the winter months. You can jump on a snowmobile, try the exciting ice hole adventure or enjoy the winter landscape while gliding on snowshoes. Long-distance buses run to Himos and stop at the Himos ramp. Alternatively, you can travel by train to Jämsä and then take a connecting bus to Himos. Buses operate on Saturdays and during ski vacation weeks, with an extended service on weekdays.
