The route can be traveled by car and, in the summer, also by bicycle, and its total length is just over 40 km. The route is best traveled in the summer, but many destinations can be visited year-round. In winter, we recommend confirming the opening hours of each destination separately. Below you will find a map and detailed information about the destinations.

Himmaanmäki Observation Tower

Start the day by admiring the forest and field landscapes opening up from Himmaan Huippu (in Finnish). The area also has a campfire site and a 600 m long nature trail. In the summer, the small Torni Café serves at the tower.

Opening hours: The tower is freely accessible to everyone at their own risk throughout the year. No winter maintenance.

Day trip to Keuruu

Destination 1 : Himmaanmäki Observation Tower

  ”Take a moment to relax on Himman Huippu” 
  
  Himmaan Huippu is a 22-metre observation tower in the Jyväskylä Region in Keuruu, in the village of Riiho. The tower opens to beautiful landscape of forest and lakes that changes according to the seasons. In addition to the observation tower, there is also an outdoor fireplace with firewood, and a rental hut with room for up to 60 persons. There is a nature trail with fun activities as well as walks of different lengths in the summer. In the summertime, you can enjoy not only the scenery but also the baked delicacies at Café Torni. In winter, the main attraction are the ski tracks ranging from 1.5 to 16 km in length, as well as the ski track café in the weekends.   You can reach Himmaan Huippu by car and it is also suitable for people with physical disabilities. The tower area is built and operated by the Riiho Village Association.

  The roots of Keuruu Old Church go back to the 18th century, when the church was consecrated in 1758. The beautiful wooden church in the peasant style was designed by the master church builder Antti Hakola (1709-1778) from Alahärmä. The paintings in the church are the work of Turku artist Johan Tilén.
  
  There are gatehouses or passages in the churchyard. The western gatehouse was used as a changing room for men after a long journey to church, while the southern gatehouse was reserved for women. The northern side gatehouse was for those who arrived late. It has not survived to the present day, and in its place stands a 21-metre-long church boat, “Iso Valkonen”, completed in 1879.
  
  Ten people are buried under the church. One of them is Abraham Indrenius the Elder, who was the pastor of Keuruu from 1750 to 1770. In the church there are old instruments of shame, the black bench and the stocks. The church is almost in its original condition.
  
  Weddings, concerts, prayers and visits are held here from 1 May to 30 September. A harmonium is played during services.

Destination 6 : Cruise on the paddle-boat Elias Lönnrot

Next, hop on board of the paddle-boat Elias Lönnrot and sail to the waves of Lake Keurusselkä to enjoy a warm summer day.
Note! The paddle-boat also operates a route between Keuruu’s Ahtola harbor and the day’s final destination, Hotel Keurusselkä. So you can also arrive at the day’s final stop by boat. If you leave your car at Keuruu harbor, make sure you are in time for the return trip or stay overnight at Hotel Keurusselkä.

  The paddle-boat m/s Elias Lönnrot has been cruising on Lake Keurusselkä since 1986. The boat is a replica of the boat of the same name which operated on Lake Keurusselkä at the end of the 19^th century. The original vessel was scrapped at the turn of the century.
  
  On the paddle-boat there is a café-restaurant that serves snacks. For chartered cruises it is also possible to enjoy a full meal.
  
  The boat can operate from its home port of Ahtola in the centre of Keuruu, to the shore at Hotel Keurusselkä. This trip of approx. one hour is the most popular route.
  
  Other piers can be found at Nyyssänniemi Camping in Keuruu, and at Myllyranta, the Art Town Mänttä-Vilppula, located at the southern end of the lake.
  
  During the season, the boat runs regular scheduled services and by appointment, during the months of May to September. Furthermore, the boat organizes themed cruises, with music, good food and stories.
  The boat is popular with travel groups, and can also be booked for family reunions, meetings or other gatherings. The boat can accommodate a maximum of 125 customers.
Destination 7 : Dinner: Hotel Keurusselkä

You can arrive at Hotel Keurusselkä either by cruising on the paddle-boat Elias Lönnrot (in Finnish) from Keuruu harbor or by car. In the restaurant of Hotel Keurusselkä, you can enjoy stunning lake views alongside your dinner.

  In Hotel Keurusselkä, you can stay in a cosy hotel room or relax in a holiday apartments for six people. The hotel can accommodate around 200 people and the Keurusharju holiday apartments almost as many.
  
  During your holiday, you can go hiking in the wilderness and roast sausages on an open fire at a lean-to or cycle the nearby cycling routes, and the Keurusselkä outdoor activity park has an 18-hole disc golf course and excellent ski tracks. The hotel has a padel court, a tennis court, a minigolf course and a beach volleyball court. Stand-up paddleboards, canoes and electric bikes are available for rent. The restaurant arranges popular dancing events in the evenings.
  
  To relax during your active holiday, you can use the spa’s whirlpools, bathe in the lakeside sauna or enjoy wellness treatments ranging from reflexology to traditional Finnish Kalevala bonesetting.
