Welcome to the capital city of Alvar Aalto’s architecture

In Jyväskylä, the city of lakes and hills in the heart of the Finnish Lakeland, you’ll find the world’s largest collection of significant building complexes designed by the renowned architect and academician Alvar Aalto. Three of these sites, Säynätsalo Town Hall, Muuratsalo Experimental House and the Aalto Campus built around the University of Jyväskylä’s Main Building, are part of the Aalto Works ensemble recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The sites in Jyväskylä also form part of the Alvar Aalto Route – 20th Century Architecture and Design, a cultural route that was recognised in 2021 as one of the prestigious Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.

The impressive portfolio of 30 locations in the Jyväskylä Region includes, for instance, the Alvar Aalto Museum (now part of the Aalto2 museum centre), Muurame Church and Jyväskylä City Theatre. Aalto also designed a wooden motorboat for himself (Nemo propheta in Patria, i.e. No one is a prophet in his own country) to go to his summer villa, the Muuratsalo Experimental House. The boat is permanently on display in a distinguished location at Jyväskylä’s Lutakko Harbour.

Alvar Aalto also went to school, started a family and began his illustrious career in Jyväskylä. Indeed, the city of Jyväskylä is home to Aalto creations from the very start of his career right through to designs from his final years. An easy place to begin exploring Aalto’s legacy is the Aalto2 Museum Centre, home to two museums under one roof: the Alvar Aalto Museum and the Museum of Central Finland. In early October 2026, a new visitor centre will open at Aalto2, featuring an exhibition that introduces Jyväskylä’s Aalto Works sites as well as the other World Heritage sites of the Jyväskylä Region.
