When the sun barely sets

In the Jyväskylä Region, Lakeland Finland, summer brings a breathtaking natural phenomenon: the white nights. From mid-May to late July, daylight lingers well past midnight and the sky glows with soft shades of gold and blue even after the sun has set. Around the summer solstice in late June, the nights are at their brightest – a period that locals call valoisat yöt, meaning ‘white nights’.

While the true midnight sun occurs north of the Arctic Circle, the Jyväskylä Region still enjoys luminous summer nights where darkness never fully falls and the landscape remains bathed in soft light. The countless lakes mirror the sky’s glow, doubling the effect of light and stillness. The best time to travel to Finland to experience this phenomenon is between 15 June and 15 July, when the sun rises at around 3:30 am and sets close to midnight.

Cultural awakening in the brief Finnish summer

Summer in Finland is more than a season, it’s a cultural revival. After long, dark winters, the arrival of light and warmth sparks a collective shift in mood and behavior. The tradition of kesämökki (summer cottage) is central: millions of Finns retreat to lakeside cabins to reconnect with nature and family.

Midsummer is the pinnacle of this seasonal celebration. Bonfires, folk music, and all-night festivities honor the sun and the fleeting warmth.

Experience it like a local Finn

When the nights stay bright, life in Finnish towns and villages shifts outdoors. Families gather for lakeside picnics that stretch past midnight, children play in parks long after bedtime, and cafés keep their terraces open as golden light reflects off nearby water. This unique atmosphere makes summer the perfect time to explore Finnish Lakeland and its unforgettable outdoor experiences – thanks to the never-ending daylight!

In Jyväskylä, people climb the Harju Ridge for a midnight view over the city, or cycle around Lake Jyväsjärvi as the sky glows pink and gold. Others simply sit on a pier, for example, at the lively Lutakko harbour in Jyväskylä – watching the horizon shimmer while enjoying the gentle sounds of nature and evening life by the water. Most Finns end their summer days in the most Finnish way possible – with a warm sauna and a cool swim under the light of the midnight sun.
