Free-of-charge activities in Jyväskylä and Jyväskylä Region

The magnificent nature of Jyväskylä Region, fascinating cultural sites and free events offer visitors to Jyväskylä and Jyväskylä Region plenty to see and experience for free. We have collected some tips below of the kind of free destinations and activities you can find in Jyväskylä Region!

Free tourist attractions

Jyväskylä Region offers a number of free tourist attractions. In the historical setting of the Toivola Old Courtyard, you can visit boutiques, pop in for a coffee, and go to the free Craftsmanship Museum. At the Pienmäki Farm Buildings Museum in Hankasalmi, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the past in the courtyard lined by log buildings.

Located right next to the centre of Jyväskylä, Harju is a popular outdoor recreation area with stunning views over the city. You can enter the Harju observation tower free of charge.

You can also pass a summer day enjoying the atmosphere of a summer cafe or an amusement park. At the Haanpää Summer Café, you get to meet, for example, alpacas, sheep and bunnies for free. Nokkakivi Amusement Park offers an old-timey atmosphere, and the area is free to enter. The amusement park also has an arcade, where you can learn about the history of games and try out different gaming machines for free.

Alvar Aalto’s architecture

Alvar Aalto’s unique architectural sites have reaped fame around the world, and it is also possible to admire them independently, for example, by walking or cycling around the City of Jyväskylä. Did you know that Jyväskylä has been dubbed the Alvar Aalto capital, and there are a total of 30 sites designed by Aalto?

Take a self-guided city tour and discover Alvar Aalto’s architecture in Jyväskylä, such as the wooden boat Nemo Propheta in Patria in Jyväskylä Harbour, the university’s Seminaarinmäki campus and the Aira building, the first building Aalto designed as a residential apartmet building.

Magnificent natural sites

There are several magnificent natural sites in Jyväskylä Region that you can enjoy free of charge. Four national parks offer thrilling scenery and varied routes to suit every hiker. The numerous nature trails in the area lead the traveller to deep forests and lake shores.

In June, you can admire the flowering rhododendrons in the Jyväskylä Rhododendron Park and in the Äänekoski Rhododendron Park. Another idyllic site is the Naissaari island with its historical Wanha Woimala whose beautiful setting offers plenty to see. You can find a great place to watch sunset in Mämminiemi, in Toivakka.

Oravivuori measuring point, one of the two UNESCO World Heritage sites in Jyväskylä Region, is accessible free of charge. The observation tower offers a beautiful view over the forests of Jyväskylä Region and the Päijänne lake.

Fascinating cultural experiences

Several free events in Jyväskylä Region offer experiences for people of all ages. Yläkaupungin Yö, held in May, is one of Jyväskylä’s most popular cultural events and offers a diverse programme spread across the city. The event is free of charge and includes, for example, concerts, shows, exhibitions and workshops. The city festival Jyväskylä Festival offers a diverse serving of culture, and there are also free events available. In the Wemmi harvest market , held every autumn, you will have a chance to explore Finnish food and handicraft products.

Jyväskylä and the surrounding areas also have many museums with free entry. For example, you can visit both permanent and temporary exhibitions free of charge at the Natural History Museum, Gallery Ratamo and Soihtu Exhibition Centre. The Galleria exhibition space downstairs of the Jyväskylä Art Museum has free entry. In the summer, it is also possible to visit the Studio Home of the Heiska Family and the Working-Class Home Museum in Niitynpää.

The roadside churches, open in summertime, are also a great way to discover art and architecture. Toivakka Church is well known for its ceiling paintings and Muurame Church for Alvar Aalto’s architecture. An old wooden church can be admired in the beautiful Luhanka summer church.

Brilliant lights

Jyväskylä’s magnificent light installations are a delight all year round. Did you know that there are over 100 permanently illuminated sites in the city? Beautifully illuminated sites include the Ylistö Bridge, Harju Stairs and Nikolainkulma. Explore the illuminated sites on the City of Light route.

The City of Light event, held every autumn, brings some shine to Jyväskylä as the evenings grow darker. In the event, you get to admire dozens of works of light art around the city and take part in side events organised during the event. At Christmas time, the city is lit up by the Illuminated Christmas Park in Church Park

Things to do in the winter

In the winter, there are many ways of enjoying the outdoors and various activities in Jyväskylä Region. You can find suitable routes for every skier in Jyväskylä’s extensive network of ski tracks. You can pack your own lunch for the ski trip and enjoy it in one of the several lean-tos in the area while admiring the wintery landscapes. Other parts of Jyväskylä Region also have many different types of ski tracks, and up-to-date information on them is available in the Ladulle.fi service.

Jyväskylä Region offers excellent opportunities for ice skating, as there are both artificial ice rinks and ice-covered lakes in the area. When weather conditions permit, a large ice skating track is ploughed onto the ice of lake Jyväsjärvi where you can speed around ice skating, skiing, walking or kicksledding. In Jämsä, there are up to three ice skating trails in wintertime where you can enjoy beautiful scenery while skating.

In the winter, it is possible to cross the ice to admire the Saraakallio rock paintings in Laukaa. The rock paintings are the largest in Fennoscandia, and the first painted images date back up to 7,000 years.
